Protect You and Your Home While on VacationPosted: July 24, 2012
People are sharing a bit too much on line. Check Facebook or Twitter updates and you can learn if people are out shopping or on vacation. The use of FourSquare, Gowalla and other location based mobile apps allow people to share where they are on the Internet. And it’s time sensitive information that updates as you update it. Is this a safe thing to do? If you’ve announced that you have gone on a vacation, you’re letting strangers know that your home, apartment, or condo will be empty. Just perfect for someone looking to get in and steal your property.
Be careful about what you share on social media sites. Don’t make it easy for someone looking to do wrong know that there’s no one home and your property is unattended. Bad people troll the Internet to get information about others. It’s simple to find out a stranger’s address and phone number. And by updating where you are and when, you’re providing even more sensitive information.
When you’re on vacation, you want to relax. This is not the time to worry about your home or your property. Don’t spread the word about your whereabouts. Let a trusted neighbor know where you’ll be gone and how to get in touch with you in case of an emergency. Ask a family member or a friend to check on your place while you’re gone. Some areas have a Neighborhood Watch program that will drive past your house at least once a day for free. If you have an alarm system, set it and give your family member or friend the information needed for your account. Let your alarm company know that you’re giving this person approval to be responsible for your home while you’re gone.
If your place is broken into even if you have taken these precautions your Renter’s Insurance or your Homeowner’s Insurance will cover the loss of your property. Insurance is for times like this, when something unexpected happens. Even though it is a dreadful thing to go through, knowing that you have personal property insurance can make it a bit easier to cope with.
Be careful when you go on a trip. The information should be between you, your family and close friends. When you come home, you can share your news and photos of your vacation with your on line friends!
