Snowy Weather Pre-Maintence on Your Vehicle

Them temperatures are already starting to fall in the northern US and Canada and winter will be coming in the next couple of  months. If you are traveling over the country into colder states you will more than likely run into states that will have snow. If you have never experienced driving in snow you need to inform yourself of what you will need to do for  vehicle to stay safe and warm.

First and foremost read up and talk to other people that have experience with driving in snow, about black ice, skidding, snow banks and basically what to look out for.

Second to have a qualified mechanic look over your car for anything that may need to be replace, oil change etc.

Third are the checks you would do if you were living in a state that has snowy conditions.

Anti Freeze

This is an essential part of winter proctection for your engine. Have a mechanic check to see if your radiator needs flushing and then add a mix of 50% water and 50% antifreeze.

Snow Tires

Tires should be checked before going on any road trip. The tread, pressure etc. In states without snow the same tires are used year round, so as your heading toward the colder states these tires will not preform as well. A swap along the way for snow tires would be a good safety measure.

Windshield Wipers

Make sure your windshield wipers are in excellent condition or replace them for new ones. There will be more then just rain falling from the sky and chances are mud, muck and salt from the roads will reak havoc on your windshield. You want to be sure wipers are in top shape to handle the job so you can see through a clean windshield. Also be sure that your washer fluid is full and working correctly.

Weather Conditions

Always stay tuned to the weather and keep track of hotels along the way of your trip in case you may need to pull in early because of a snow storm.

Other Tips to Consider for Safety

To avoid ice in the fuel lines or gas tank, keep it as near to full as possible.

Give someone your itinerary for your route and how long you will be on the road.

Always carry an safety kit, extra blankets, clothes etc.

If traveling with a cell phone, you may want to check with your service for black out area’s and be sure to have a car charger for the phone that you can plug into a wall or your vehicle.
