We wrote a previous article back in July that come October 1, 2013 texting and driving in Florida will be illegal. This means that you cannot manually text while driving, but the law does stipulate that you can text while stopped at traffic lights. This law is also considered a secondary offense which means that you would need to be pulled over for another offense to be ticketed.
This is how the seat belt law started and today it is a primary offense and if you are seen not wearing a seat belt you can be pulled over and given a ticket. So perhaps texting and driving may someday become a primary offense.
According to the National Safety Council
1,600,000 accidents per year are to blame for texting and driving
5 seconds is the minimal amount of time your attention is taken away from the road while texing and driving. That equals driving the length of a football field driving at 55 mph
A person texting and driving is about 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated
See all the statistic Here – very informative!
If you must answer a call, get a hands free phone. If you must text, pull over.
