An SR-22 / FR-44 is a certificate used by the insurer to file the motorist’s policy with the state. You’ll need an SR-22 or an FR-44 if you’ve had a problem with your drivers license, such as a DUI, (Drinking Under the Influence), reckless driving or not carrying auto insurance. This is a major part of your journey as a driver to get back the privilege of driving.
An SR-22 is a form that is submitted by your auto insurance company to Florida’s Bureau of Financial Responsibility. This ensures that you have met the state of Florida’s liability limits. The state requires you to carry minimum liability limits of $10,000 in bodily injury per person and $10,000 in property damage. You will pay more for auto insurance because of your driving record. Plus, you’ll pay a $15 filing fee to submit the SR-22.
You may also be required to file an FR-44 which is similar to an SR-22 but the minimum liability is higher – the minimum requirements are $100,000 in bodily injury per person and $50,000 property damage. The cost to file the FR-44 is also $15 but again you will pay more for auto insurance because of your driving record and the increased liability limits. This form is referred to as Florida Uniform Financial Responsibility Certificate FR-44 or just FR-44 for short. You must maintain this filing for three years.
If you are required to fill an SR-22 or an FR-44, you will have to pay more for your auto insurance, but there’s no need to pay more than necessary. This is where an insurance agency like Budget Bi Rite comes in. They are able to help you find the policy you need at the cost you can afford. They will also assist you with filing for your SR-22 and FR-44 in their office.
